ARPRO® Goes Beyond PackagingWinning Designs Announced for ARPRO Environmental Design CompetitionJSP, the leading supplier of ARPRO expanded polypropylene (EPP), an environmentally sustainable material, launched its ARPRO Design Competition: 'Beyond Packaging' in September 2007 as part of the London Design Festival. The company invited designers to take a fresh look at ways to reduce the environmental impact of product packaging. "We were looking for a new approach to packaging and examples that could become marketable on a broad scale. We wanted to prove that good design and ARPRO was all you need," said Andrew Coles, business analysis director for JSP "In setting the design challenge," continued Coles, "we identified three broad strategies based on the material properties and benefits derived from using ARPRO. First, self-protecting products that reduce packaging requirements by using ARPRO in the product manufacture, increasing its self-protection. Then, a purpose beyond packaging where the package itself becomes a useful product. Finally, we sought multi-functional designs where the package remains functional long-term and is robust enough to last the lifetime of the goods within." To increase the number of competition entries, registration and submission were simple web-based procedures. Design tips and examples were made available on ARPRO.com. The distinguished judging panel included Jimmy MacDonald from Tent London, as well as Tom Lloyd and Luke Pearson from PearsonLloyd. The panel judged over 150 designs submitted from around the world, selecting a top winner and two tier winners. The winning design was a combination violin case and stand created by Ju Young Kim, a design student from the UK. The violin case and stand was a shining example of the 'purpose beyond packaging' category and demonstrated the innovative functional design possibilities of ARPRO. Other winning designs were a fluorescent light where the shade/holder is also its main packaging; a clever combined laptop transport pack and bag rounded out the selections. The winning designs can be see at ARPRO.com, plus two specially commended designs.
